Detoxification

In today's world, our bodies are exposed to far more toxins than in previous generations.  These sources of toxicity come from the foods we eat, water we drink, air we breathe, chemicals we use in cleaning and personal care products, pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals, medications, and many more.  In fact, since World War II over 80,000 new chemicals have been introduced into our environment.  This has resulted in infant cord blood containing on average 287 different chemicals including known endocrine disruptors and carcinogens.  In many cases the indoor air quality has been shown to be two to five times more toxic than the outdoor air.  Since we can't live in a bubble, it is critical that we have programs and protocols in place to remove these toxins that accumulate within our cells.  Many of these toxins are deposited into the cytoplasm of the cell where they stay because the cell can no longer function properly.  A lot of these toxins are also lipophilic which means they love fats and end up getting stored within fat cells.  Our nervous system and brain are predominantly made of fat and therefore is another common location where toxins get stored in the body.

When it comes to considering detoxification we need to have a discussion about the cell.  This simple structure that we learned about in 6th grade biology is much more complex and dynamic than we had ever learned about back then.  Cells are filled with many different kinds of organelles that each have specific roles and functions within the body.  These organelles are suspended within the fluid or cytoplasm of the cell and this is all housed within a cell membrane.  One organelle that we emphasize optimizing in our practice is the mitochondria, which are responsible for producing all of the cell’s energy in the form of ATP.  When the body is in a state of chronic disease, systemic inflammation, and toxicity, the mitochondria power down and cannot do their jobs properly.  This lack of cellular energy has a profound impact on how someone feels and functions.  At Restorative Chiropractic, we utilize several tools that are focused on restoring the cellular energy and getting those cells the fuel that they need to function optimally again.  For example, the new Erchonia FX635 laser at the office is one such way that we work on the mitochondria along with detoxification programs and functional medicine interventions.

A critical component in detoxification is restoring the cell.  There are many 10 or 21-day programs out there which can be beneficial, but they barely scratch the surface to the toxic burden within our bodies.  One program that we utilize in our office has been True Cellular Detox.  This is a simple and effective program that lasts four months and provides a very systematic structure to detoxification.  It is far more robust than the other short-term programs that are on the market and we view it as a mid-level program.  Ultimately, the best system in our opinion is blending elements of True Cellular Detox and functional medicine which we have termed Complete Cellular Restoration.  CCR is truly a customized program for each patient and utilizes cutting edge laboratory testing, specific nutritional interventions, and comprehensive supplement recommendations to completely restore the function of each cell in your body.
