Melaleuca Essential Oil

Melaleuca, also known as tea tree, has been used in its country of origin, Australia, for thousands of years to treat ear infections. It  has an abundance of antimicrobial properties, namely a component called terpinen-4-ol, to help combat infection.

It is imperative to never use essential oils within the inner ear. To use melaleuca for ear infections, dilute it in a carrier oil and apply to the skin behind the ear as well as the front.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender has many antimicrobial properties making it a good choice for children who complain of ear pain. This essential oil works to decrease inflammation and pressure in the affected area while promoting swifter healing.

Like melaleuca, lavender should never be placed in the inner ear. Instead, make sure the oil is diluted and apply it behind and in front of the ear.

Probiotics

The health of the microbiome is intimately related to ear infections. There are both beneficial and negative bacteria in our guts, on our skin, and even in our sinus cavities. Ensuring beneficial bacteria in the form of probiotics are being given is an important step in preventing and treating ear infections. About 80% of the immune system is found within the gut so supporting it with probiotics is an important piece to helping children with this common affliction.
